What we believe, and where this came from.
There is no founder photograph on this page and no biography, which is a deliberate choice rather than an oversight. What matters to a buyer is what the work is, what it costs, and what happens when it goes wrong. So that is what is here.
Finance is the system every other decision runs on
When it is late or wrong, a company makes every other decision in the dark — it prices badly, hires at the wrong moment, and finds out in March what was true in November.
So the aim is narrow and we would rather say it plainly than dress it up: to be the best finance function a mid-market company can buy. Not the cheapest, and not the biggest.
And to grow the way our clients grow. If their revenue doubles and their close gets faster, we have done the job, and our fee rises with the work rather than with what we think they could be made to pay. That is the whole of the win-win, and it only works in one order: they win first.
Six things we actually believe
- A late close is a management problem, not a finance problem.Nobody sets out to close on day thirty. It happens because no step has a date against it and no step has an owner. Both of those are fixable in weeks, and almost nobody fixes them because everyone is busy closing.
- A published price is a form of respect.Making a CEO sit through a scoping call to learn a number is a way of finding out what they will pay rather than what the work costs. We would rather publish the number, be wrong about it occasionally in our own direction, and keep the conversation about the work.
- The arithmetic belongs on the page.Every figure we put in front of you carries its components and its source. If a total does not foot, that is a defect in our work and we would like you to be the one who catches it quickly rather than the one who inherits it slowly.
- Documentation is the product. The reports are an output. What you are actually buying is a finance function that keeps working when a person leaves, including when the person leaving is us. If our work only runs while we are holding it, we have sold you a dependency.
- Automation is only worth it if a human can be held to the result. We use software aggressively and we will use whatever tool closes the books faster. But nothing posts to your ledger without a named human having looked at it, and we will not use a tool that cannot write as a named user with a timestamp.
- Small is a feature until it is not.A small firm gives you a senior person on your actual work instead of a manager relaying it. It also has a ceiling. We would rather tell you when you have reached ours than staff your account with people learning on your ledger.
Where the experience comes from
The work behind this firm is controller and finance-operations work, done in house rather than sold from outside: venture-backed software companies, a multi-entity non-profit with restricted funds and grant reporting, and a services business with overseas subsidiaries and cross-currency intercompany balances that had to be eliminated every month and tie out every quarter.
That means ledgers migrated between systems with balances tied out on both sides, consolidations built by hand and then automated so they stopped being built by hand, thirteen-week cash forecasts maintained through periods when the number mattered, close calendars taken from the middle of the following month into the first week of it, and first-audit preparation done from the client side of the table while an auditor worked through it.
How the firm is put together
We are deliberately small: a senior finance lead, with contracted specialist capacity brought in against named pieces of work. We would rather tell you that plainly than imply a bench we do not have. It is also why the fee schedule has the shape it has — the accounting service is priced as a function rather than by the hour, because that is genuinely how it is staffed.
This firm is new, and you should hear that from us
Millrace started in 2026. There is no wall of client logos on this site because there is no wall of client logos. We are not going to borrow credibility with stock photography, invented case studies, or a founding date that quietly predates the work.
What being new actually means, stated both ways. Against us: no track record you can check, and you would be among the first. For you: the person doing your work is the person who designed the process rather than a junior three layers down; we have capacity for you; and the method was built this year, on the systems you actually run, instead of being inherited from 2009 and patched since.
We are not asking you to go easy on us because we are new. The opposite. The free close review, the published fee schedule and the date guarantee all exist because a firm without a track record should have to prove more than an established one, not less. Test us on the first month: we take the day-to-day off you, we run the first close ourselves, and you get a written assessment you own whatever you decide. That is a better test than a logo grid, and cheaper for you than being wrong.
These services do not require a state licence, and we are not a CPA firm.
The name
A millrace is the channel that carries water to the wheel. It does not generate anything on its own; it makes the flow arrive with enough force, at the right place, on time. That is roughly the job.
What we will not do
By name, so you can rule us out quickly if one of these is the thing you actually need.
- Tax returnsWe do not prepare or sign federal, state or local returns. We hand your tax preparer a clean trial balance and the schedules they ask for.
- An opinion on your financial statementsWe cannot issue one. If a bank, a buyer or a board requires one, you need a licensed firm, and our job is to make you cheap and quick for them to work with.
- Payroll processingWe do not run payroll. We book it, reconcile it, and keep the accruals honest.
- Legal, tax, investment or actuarial adviceNamed in the footer of every page of this site, and meant.
- Hourly workWe do not sell hours, and we do not bill for a phone call. The fee is the fee.
- Cleanup-only projectsIf you want two years of history rebuilt and nothing afterwards, a good bookkeeper is the right answer and we are not.
- Holding your moneyWe are never a signatory on your accounts and never take custody of client funds. Every payment leaves on your release.
- Vendor kickbacksNo commission, referral fee or rebate from any software vendor, ever.
- Quoting blindWe will not put a fixed fee on a description of your books. We take read-only access and look first, every time.
- Taking a client we cannot staffIf we cannot start you properly inside four weeks we will say so rather than put you in a queue.
Test the claim rather than the credentials.
Book the call, and then let the first month tell you whether any of the above is true.
The call is free and there is no fee for it, ever. If we are not the right shape for you we will say so on the call.
